Wire Rope Safety Barrier
Wire rope safety barrier — also called cable barrier or wire rope fence — is a flexible vehicle restraint system that absorbs crash energy by deflecting under impact. Because the ropes stretch and the line posts release, the system redirects a vehicle gradually instead of stopping it abruptly, which lowers occupant deceleration compared with rigid barriers.

What Is a Wire Rope Safety Barrier?
A wire rope barrier consists of three to four horizontal steel ropes threaded through or clipped to line posts, tensioned between concrete anchor blocks at each end of the run. On impact:
- The ropes carry the load in tension and deflect laterally.
- Line posts bend or release from their sockets, so they do not spear the vehicle.
- Energy is absorbed over a longer distance, reducing peak impact force on occupants.
- After a minor hit, usually only the affected posts and rope tension need service — repair is faster and cheaper than replacing rigid barrier segments.
The trade-off is deflection. Wire rope systems need clear working width behind the barrier, so they suit wide medians and open roadsides rather than narrow bridge parapets or locations with rigid obstacles close behind.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is wire rope barrier cheaper than W-Beam guardrail?
Material cost per metre is often lower, but total cost depends on post spacing, anchor blocks and terminals. For a like-for-like comparison, send the run length, containment level and post spacing and we will quote both options.
How much space does a wire rope barrier need behind it?
Enough clear width for the system deflection at the specified containment level — typically several metres. If your clear zone is narrow, a semi-rigid W-Beam or Thrie-Beam system is usually the correct choice.
Can you supply components only, or complete systems?
Both. We commonly supply ropes, line posts, sockets, anchor hardware and tensioners in bulk for contractors who install locally, and we can quote a complete component package against your drawings.
What steel grade and coating do you use?
Q235 or Q355 (S235JR / S355JR equivalent) for posts, hot-dip galvanized to EN ISO 1461. Rope is pre-stretched galvanized steel wire rope in 1570 or 1770 MPa class. Both are confirmed in writing before production.
